Thank you, Lynelle! The logo is inspired by a real turtle I know from the zoo. There's a group of them who are SO lovely to draw, and one is very much a loner. His name is "Wheelie" and he's just wonderful! 🐢

That's so kind of you, Jean! I LOVE that she found painting at 60 and you started writing at the same age. That's so inspiring! Have you written about your journeys? It seems so cool to have your mom's paintings on your posts. Please feel free to reach out if you and your mom want to try a session sometime! ❤️

Beth deserves ALL THE FLOWERS (and pup snugs)! An absolute gem of a human and artist.

I wish Beth allowed full access for at least a month so I could see and understand the benefits I might glean from her. It’s hard to commit to over $100 without knowing if it’s something I will truly find beneficial.

I believe she offers access to a workshop in her welcome email, which might help.

Thanks, Sarah. I didn’t see it in her first email but it was there in her second.

My favorite line, “Think of what you want to receive and share that with others.” Reading this interview was a a great way to begin my day! Thanks Sarah and Beth.

I love that you pulled that quote out. So good. I needed to read it again too!

Thank you for writing such nice things about me, Sarah! When I signed up to Writers at Work, I thought I'd learn some tricks to improve my writing practice. Then you created an endlessly inspiring, supportive community!

You’re so welcome. I love having you in it. It wouldn’t be the same without you.

I’ve heard that Sarah Fey comment before, and that’s why I’m here!

Her advice to struggling writers on Substack is spot on. It's not just about growth; it's about finding our supportive community and sharing our unique voice. And the reminder to have fun with our creative pursuits is something we all need. 🎨

It's cool to see more folks doing fiction/literature! And youre right about a supportive community; Substack is more than a tech platform at this point, it's a whole network.

"I want to help folks love their failures as much as their masterpieces." Loved this sentiment so much. I drafted a picture book story recently and my mentor asked, "Can you illustrate?" I said, "Not yet." I'll try! This newsletter came at the perfect time. Thank you Sarah and Beth!

Sarah Fay, PhD's avatar

I love that too!

Beth Spencer's avatar

"Not yet" is the perfect answer! I love that powerful mindset, trusting that you'll get there. Last week, I heard a yoga instructor say "that isn't in my capacity right now" and it made me so happy.

Solid advice from Beth here, and it's advice that I've just recently begun to adopt. 'Keep going even when you're not growing as quickly as others' is one of my mantras right now... I launched my newsletter last Summer and had been writing into the void for months. It's only recently, when I realized that engaging with the community and building relationships with other writers here was the best path to real growth, that I've seen real progress.

And yes, don't use AI, that's lame... people want to read stuff from real humans with real thoughts and feelings.

Sarah Fay, PhD's avatar

Amen to not using AI. I love that you didn’t give up. Substack is definitely a long game, which is great because it’s such a lovely place to be.
