I had the best St. Patrick’s Day opening for this post—complete with an illustration of a nineteenth-century Irish couple dancing a jig and a photo of the the kind of green carnation boutonniere my father used to give us every morning on St. Patrick’s Day to wear to school (not easy to pull of in adolescence, let me tell you)—but somehow I must have deleted it, so we’ll dive right in.

Okay, I couldn’t resist finding an image of the boutonniere because, well, my description didn’t do it justice—imagine rocking this on your shirt in the halls in high school. Yup.

Nothing on Substack should be done for the sake of it—especially using images.
