A list of prompts for you to use to write your next Substack Note…
• Introduce yourself but be real.
(Some people are kind of creepy when they do this. It takes a soft touch. Imagine you just walked into a room full of people you don’t know.)
• Use white space to slow scrolling readers down (think like a poet).
• Thoughtfully explain something to us without being pedantic.
(And bold what you want us to pay attention to!)
• Take a photo of text you want us to read.
• Share your life trajectory that led you to Substack.
This one’s on the verge of becoming a cliche so hop to it.
• Post a stunning photo that needs no explanation.
• Genuinely crowdsource (ask for people’s knowledge/opinion) for your next post.
Start with, Hey, I’m writing a post about ______ and need to know _____. [Ask your question.]
• Write a quote or thought that means a lot to you on a sticky note or piece of paper, take a photo, post the photo.
• Share your latest Substack milestone. If you hate milestone posts, lightly poke at milestone posts.
• Share a photo of your workspace and why it’s amazing but also not as great as it could be.
• Post a photo on Notes that doesn’t seem like it should be on Notes.
• Also, trees and nature.
• Mark milestones (but easy on the subscriber numbers), even if they’re supposedly small, i.e., you’ve been on here 12 hours.
• Be timely.
• Share something you’ve accomplished late in life.
• Admit to not being able to find your people and try to find them.
• Wonder about something in a humorous/absurdist way.
• A social media classic: before and after
• Share your “flaws” that aren’t flaws.
• Let us in on a project/quest you’re starting or have been doing.
• Post a song and let us know how it appeared in your life.
• If you draw, post your drawings/art.
• Share your content calendar (or part of it) as a “coming soon.”
• What do you need to hear today? What encouragement do you need? Tell us/encourage us with it on Notes.
• Report on your Substack experience thus far.
• Pet pictures, pet pictures, pet pictures.
• Share the funniest thing you saw, witnessed, or experienced this week.
• Share something sad that (oddly) made you feel happy.
• Ask for help but only with something you really need help with.
• Share something positive Substack has given you.
• What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself since being on Substack—good or bad?
• Sunsets, sunrises—works every time.
• TEXT ONLY—use bullets and bolding
• PHOTO—a space in your house that means a lot to you with one sentence to illuminate it.
If you have ideas for Notes prompts, share them below!
I'll turn this into a game and use all the prompt suggestions here. I might be talking to no one, but I can still have fun while doing it 🤪
Thanks, Sarah!
I had two notes that went viral. One was “what I wish we had been taught at school” which is still going over 3 weeks later and I’m about to write a post on it https://substack.com/@theburnoutrebellion/note/c-70701829?r=30c5ht&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action
And the other is things I thought would make me happy vs what actually does https://substack.com/@theburnoutrebellion/note/c-69119741?r=30c5ht&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action
Both were completely unexpected but have prompted such interesting discussions. I hope this helps anyone looking for a viral note format ❤️
