I taught English composition when I was a grad student. I wrote "So what?" on a student's essay once. It wasn't the only comment I made, but it was the only comment he paid attention to and he was traumatized. It ended up with a meeting between me, the student, and the composition director or maybe the dean! My point was the same as Austin's classics professor--give me a reason to want to read this. I've been editing my memoir recently, asking myself the same question on every page. So what, Andi? Who cares? And if I can't find the so what, the scene has got to go.
