I'm a retired English professor who escaped Upstate New York a decade ago; I've been writing and posting photos on Substack for two years, but ran out of steam 6 months ago. My topics are about animal life in L.A. (including my own) and I write about my neighborhood and the surreal elements of living in this city, being single and older (65). Valley of The Anthropocene: Canoga Park Animal Life. Looking forward to meeting you!

Hi everyone! I'm Mayra (pronounced My-ee-dah), originally from Brazil and living in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last 23 years.

I'm a daughter, wife, mom of two little ones, and an HR leader by day. Last year, life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. I started writing because I needed somewhere to put what I couldn't carry alone, but somewhere along the way, it became something much bigger.

My publication, Hot Mess, Holy Ground (https://substack.com/@mayraxara), is about motherhood, faith, work, marriage, grief, joy, and the beautiful, wild experience of being alive. I'm interested in the ordinary moments that end up changing us and the stories that remind us we're not as alone as we think.

I'm building a body of work that I hope will one day support my family while making a difference. I write honestly about this beautiful, wild life, share what I'm learning as I go, and create a place where people can witness and be witnessed.

I'd love to connect with anyone who enjoys personal essays, memoir, faith, motherhood, or simply honest storytelling. Looking forward to reading your work too.

Good afternoon! Thank you for holding the door open for me. I am new to Substack, but have been writing since I could hold a pencil in 1966. Mostly retired, I have stories of hope and courage from many teaching on a middle school campus. I understand puberty, self doubt, the importance of supportive teachers and friends, and lofty dreams.

After publishing Frances, This Time You've Gone Too Far (Boyle and Dalton 2019), I am pregnant with new ideas. As a writing project assistant with The Young Writers Program in Santa Cruz, Ca., I tell my fourth and fifth grade students that when you begin to write a story or poem, the deeper you go, the more free you will feel. I take my own advice, and know for a fact we need more empathy and to listen to one another's stories in this political climate. Kindness and creativity. Now, more than ever.

After meeting Deb Engle and the incredibly talented writers from Story Summit, writing each day is my way of life. I look forward to connecting with other writers and dreamers.

852090 Hey howdy, I'm Heidi Selig writer/illustrator writing fiction, anecdotes about nature, discombobulation, animals domestic and wild, memoir, poetry, humour and big and little questions. I'm completely new to substack having posted one thing which evidently disappeared into the cloud. So new I didn't realize my stack needed a name. But I'm a good storyteller and I'm here to write and read and discover the folks who inspire me.

Hi Everyone! I joined Substack in January 2024 and write Yoga Living 50 and Beyond. I write about embracing aging through the lens of yoga. As a yoga practitioner and instructor for the last 30 years or so, I have seen the changes my body and mind have gone through. Yoga has taught me how to love my body and self just as I am, even through the aging process.

I write about a variety of topics related to practicing yoga both on and off the mat. I break down poses, types of movement, as well as helping readers navigate the (usually untrue) stories that we tell ourselves. What you practice on the mat you take with you off the mat and into your life.

If you're over 50 and practice yoga, might be interested in practicing yoga, or know nothing about yoga but are curious, you can subscribe here: https://purpleroomyoga.substack.com.

Hi there - I'm Anna, a 40 y/o American writer and mum living in London. I spent my career in marketing/comms, honing the voices for other business (SoundCloud, Amazon) and am now finetuning my own. Court & Spark (inspired by the Joni Mitchell record) is where I try to find meanings in the margins of a busy life - with lessons learned in real time as I build a brand, finish writing my first novel, and raise two girls.

I started posting in June, and am feeling all sorts of overwhelm, so consider myself a newbie & will welcome any advice on how to make sense of the noise while building something sustainable.

Interested in connecting with other creatives who are creating against all odds. Mothers, music lovers, ex-pats, midlife reinventors...would love to meet you!

Hello everyone! I'm not a total newbie to Substack, but I am new to this community. I've been writing Art & Soul for a little more than a year. I'm a former lit prof who is now using this unique space to create a community of serious readers.

https://christinabieberlake.substack.com/

I love talking with people who believe in trying on new possibilities for their way of being in the world. I write weekly on either what I'm reading or issues related to literary study, writing, or the intellectual and spiritual life. I work at the intersection of literature, the arts, and Christian faith and spirituality. It is great to be here with you all!

Hi all I’m Neha! And fairly new to substack. I write Wired for Curiosity, a newsletter about how children actually learn.

The realization that started it: most of what we've built for kids, the schools, the curriculums, the apps, was designed around what's easy to measure instead of how learning actually works.

If you write about childhood, learning, or education, or you're just interested in this stuff, I'd love to connect.

Hi everyone, I’m Elizabeth with Good Morning, Friends.

I’m a former TV journalist and a middle and high school journalism teacher. I believe that everyone has a story worth telling.

Every week, I invite you to grab your coffee and join me as we talk about books, travel, style, beauty, affordable finds, and the little things that make everyday life a little brighter.

My hope is simple: that every time you open Good Morning, Friends, you’ll leave with a new idea to try, a place to add to your bucket list, a great book to read, or a little more joy.

Erin Ashley's avatar

Hi everyone! I'm Erin and I write Notes from Erin (http://notesfromerin.substack.com) which is a newsletter about music and books.

Every week, I write about the parallels that exist between books and music. Some recent topics I covered are how sad love songs make perfect novels, how the music and books I consumed shaped who I am today, just to name a few. Hope to see you there and so excited to see everyone here!

Hello! I write a Substack called Second Rate Cities (just click my head or name to subscribe) where I visit overlooked cities across the US. The name is tongue in cheek - I've always loved these 'lesser' places that people rarely consider visiting over our major cities or popular and exclusive destinations.

The idea is long-form writing that captures bits of city history, a healthy amount of dive bar encounters, personal exploration, and whatever else happens while covering as much ground as possible. The goal is to give readers the real vibe of a place, not a list of expensive hotels, activities, and award winning restaurant to hit. Whether a potential visitor or a local, the hope is that you have a new perspective on the place after reading.

Last city: El Paso, TX. Next city: Milwaukee, WI.

I'm always looking for more travel, culture, and Americana writers to meet and read, so please share. Looking forward to finding yours!

Elizabeth K. Stidham's avatar

That’s a fun topic! I’ve heard Milwaukee is awesome. I did a short travel post about Albuquerque earlier this summer. I’m in Tulsa and you should totally do a story here, there are some unique places.

Zach Custer's avatar

ABQ has been on my shortlist and you're the second person to rec Tulsa this month. Any callouts worth sharing? I know Greenwood Rising and Church Studio would be must visits.

Hi everyone, I've been writing The Spiral Staircase since March 2025. I'm an author, book coach (memoir) and spiritual director who writes about finding the sacred in the body and the winding path toward healing. Recently my writing has focused on stories related to my debut memoir, Toward the Light: A Year in Paris (September 2026), which traces my search for meaning and connection in the months after a traumatic assault in Paris in my early twenties.

Always happy to meet new people here on Substack!

Hi all! I've been a therapist for a long time, now here writing, and thanks to Sarah's tutorial on the Substack DNA, have refined and clarified my purpose.

I've renamed my publication--Where Women Belong--it's for women in the messy middle of midlife rediscovering themselves, and I just published my new Welcome post!

Hi everyone!!

My SUBSTACK has been such a portal to express and create in. I’ve been waiting for something that feels truly aligned and it’s here.

I write about everything from matriarchy, money, manifestation, midlife and the lessons that come from a life intentionally lived.

A space where we bid adieu to the programming of modern times (fast lies) and reclaim our original birthright (slow truth).

Most importantly, my little corner of this place holds a lot of love and beauty and there is enough to go around 👑🤍

I'm seeing a common theme that so many of us are here writing about these major midlife transitions. It's great to "meet" you here on Substack!

Brodee Myers-Cooke's avatar

Welcome to the newbies and hello old-hands.

I’m Brodee, and I write about healthy ageing for women over 50 — framing it as a road trip complete with roadmaps and tools. Destination: Joyspan.

It’s been 18 months since I launched Road Trip to Younger after finally leaving corporate media at 63.

I love bringing all my lifelong obsessions together here — words, graphics, science, ageing, agency, health and helping people navigate mess, misinformation and confusion.

Starting out isn’t easy.

I remember how confusing it was. Even though Sarah’s excellent tuition gave me the kick start I desperately needed, I’m still learning.

If I had two tips for newbies —

First, choose a topic you’ll find endlessly fascinating.

Second, go one foot wide and one mile deep, letting your passion, in all its geekiness, shine through.

Keep going!

X

Elizabeth K. Stidham's avatar

I love your topic and how you use the roadmap. Also, thank you for advice. I started Substack in January but just got serious about it in the last couple months. But growth is slow.

Anna Svoboda's avatar

Love this framing as a roadtrip - so creative. And thank you for the advice, I recently heard "mile deep, inch wide" - a foot might be more realistic! :)

Hello! I love this idea. I'm Eliza and I'm very new. Still getting my DNA and intro post together but finding there is a lot I want to post but much I'm learning about how best to reach my community. I have a debut novel coming out next fall and am writing about books, sisters, family and culture. Would love to connect with others who are interested in similar topics!
